The purpose of this study was to analyze the mentoring programs for new principals in
USA and suggest some implications to Korean mentoring programs for new principals. Two
mentoring programs - New Jersey Leaders to Leaders operated by NJ Department of
Education and Principal Mentoring Program in the NYC Leadership Academy - were
selected and analyzed to achieve the above study purpose.
The results and implications to Korean system are as follows: First, defining principals'
job standards must take precedence in order to develop the mentoring program for new
principals. Second, the professional development programs for principal should be designed
and practiced by developmental needs and levels of new principals. Third, the contents and
teaching methods of mentoring program based on adult learning theory should designed
and used. Forth, the systematic mentor training and ongoing support system for mentor are
needed for effective mentoring. Fifth, the cooperating partnerships among mentor, mentee.
school, district, and supporting groups are required to develop the mentoring program for
new principals.
