assignment of museum stlldies in Korea as what can museum professionals do for the
mllSelll11. A museum is a non profit-making pelmanent institution in the service of social
development and environment protec디on tlu'ollgh performing 4 main roles as collection &
management, research & education, communication & collaboration, and enjoyment &
enteltainment of the both tangible and intangible helitage, and cαomψ까prehen잉sψi, v잉e리lyψc않anies Ollt
the 6 main fllnctions as collectCincluded sUlvey, excavate, observe, record, and catalogue),
conserve, research, communication, exhibition, and edllcate the tangible material and
intangible information regarding people and their environment for purposes of sudy,
education, and enjoyment
Mllseology deals witl1 the theoretical research on mainly targets of museums and musellm
personnels. But mllseography deals Witl1 the technical practice on mainly targets of mllsellm
envi.ronment and its facilities. A mllseologist can contribute to felwize tl1e human 파e, to
transmit his culture, and to preserve his environment throllgh systematically lltilizing
internationally recognizable museological theolY and mllseographical practice, and interdisciplinary
and mlllti-disciplinarγ approaches.
For the training mllseum professiona1s, after tl1e Dajeon Health and Science College got the
permission to establish the Department of Museology in November 1991, it opened the
Depaltment in March 1992 and it has being provided tl1e mllseum professional program for
tl1e college students of two years course. It is a clue to promote mllse010gy tlu t tl1e Korean
Society of Museum Studies was established on 10th July 1998, since then it has being halfyearly
organized the Museum Studies Conference and it a1so has being semiannllally
pllblished the Journal of Museum Studies. In FebrualY 1997, tl1e Graduate Scho01 of Arts,
Chu-Ang University firstly established the Alt Musellm Professional Course in the evening
time. Then in FebrualY 2001, it established the Depaltment of Mllseum and Alt Museum
Stlldies in the evening time at the level of M.A degree, which has being trained the museum
professionals under the three different majors as an exhibition planning, a collection
management, and a museum education. Furthermore since 2000 years, over 10 graduate
school in Seoul and the suburbs of Seoul established and has being trained ?1e museum
professionals at the levels of M.A and Ph.D" They regrettably provide the graduate students
with the deficient sub-major curriculum comparing to the ICOM Curr‘ icula Guidelines for
Museum Professional Training was formally adopted by the 1COM Executive Council in June
2000,
A competent museum professional can well perform the museum business with a curator
who can not well carry out specific works such as planning of conservation, e양libition,
education, communication, etc. Nowadays most of Chief Executive Officer or Director of ?1e
museum wish to comprehensively and efficiently exploit not only cur따orial staffo0s
competency but also musellm professionals。φ competency such as performing specific
works those are documenting data base, managing museum collections, planning e양libitions,
interpreting educational presentation, marketing of museum events, collaborating between
the museum and the related communities, etc. 1n conclusion, museum professionals can
contribute to actively cany out the museum team work such as co-work or collaboration, and
to well perform the required museum business successfully in ?1e futllre.
