Art museum archives discussed in this article cover: 1) museum records which are organically created at art museums while museum functions performed; and 2) manuscript collections that art museums collect based on their mission, including personal papers, institutional records, and oral history. Having authenticity, hierarchical characteristics, and collectiveness as its unique attributes, art museum archives have aesthetic value other than informational value, evidential value, intrinsic value, all of which are common values of general archives. As historical records without any authorial interpretation, art museum archives are used as primary sources for researchers in the field of museum studies as well as art history. They are also presented as actual objects for museum exhibitions. Art museum archives are generally understood as research sources, and they also be functioned as educational resources for museum education programs and outreach programs, such as kids and family programs, teachers’ workshops, group tours, internship programs, lectures and talks, and among others. Educational materials produced based on archival materials contain factual information. Classroom materials developed among teachers and museum educators with archival materials would be understood as visual academic output of museum’s outreach activities. Also, archives itself would be main contents of education program, which introduce the meaning and the practical use of archives to the public. Archival workshops discussing best practices could provide museum professionals with expertise in museum studies. Art museum archives would no longer be dead records as long as they are used for lively education and outreach programs.
