Aluminum (Al) accumulation increases with aging, and long-term exposure to Al is regarded as a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. In this study, we investigated the effects of Al and/or D-galactose on neural stem cells, proliferating cells, differentiating neuroblasts, and mature neurons in the hippocampal dentate gyrus. AlCl3 (40 mg/kg/day) was intraperitoneally administered to C57BL/6J mice for 4 weeks. In addition, vehicle (physiological saline) or D-galactose (100 mg/kg) was... -
The Critical Roles of Zinc: Beyond Impact on Myocardial Signaling

Zinc has been considered as a vital constituent of proteins, including enzymes. Mobile reactive zinc (Zn2+) is the key form of zinc involved in signal transductions, which are mainly driven by its binding to proteins or the release of zinc from proteins, possibly via a redox switch. There has been growing evidence of zinc’s critical role in cell signaling, due to its flexible coordination geometry and rapid shifts in protein conformation to perform biological reactions. The importance and... -

With an increasing demand for synthetic chemical-free organic foods, botanical nematicides are taking the lead as replacements. Consequently, in the recent years, there have been vigorous efforts towards identification of the active secondary metabolites from various plants. These include mostly glucosinolates and their hydrolysis products such as isothiocyanates; flavonoids, alkaloids, limonoids, quassinoids, saponins, and the more recently probed essential oils, among others. And despite their... -

Kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.) is an economically important crop and a bacterial canker disease, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), is the most destructive disease in kiwifruit production. Therefore, prevent and control of the disease is a critical issue in kiwifruit industry worldwide. Unfortunately, there is no reliable control methods have been developed. Recently, interest in disease control using microbial agents is growing. However, kiwifruit microbiota and their roles in the... -

The purpose of this paper is three-fold: First, given the limited energy resources worldwide, the world is concerned about the depletion of fossil fuels and makes an orchestrated effort to discover alternative energy resources across countries. Thus, with the relevant review of literature, the paper stressed the importance of energy education in K-12. Second, with a lack of appropriate energy education curriculums and activities for renewable energy education, this paper introduced an... -

The romantic ideology of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 ~ 1778) firstly is a summary of his personal life experience, also the quintessence of his time spirit; moreover, it makes an outstanding contribution to the Enlightenment as well as the process of modernization theory. On one hand, it fills the deficiency of mainstream ideology of Enlightenment which is no longer confined to the rational and scientific knowledge; conversely, it strengthens the power of perception especially in art and... -

The paper is organized in six sections. The first section outlines a brief history and evolution of GCED and PE in the 20th and 21st centuries. It then provides an overview of various contents and methods of peace education for GCED through examining some common normative documents in PE. Next, the paper... -

psychic features compared to cosmic aspects. The reasons have been discussed in respect to the existence or non-existence of God. In chapter four, gunas in both systems cause bondage as a result of spirit identifying with matter. Again, liberation is a state free from the three gunas. However, in the aspects of the way to get liberation, S??khya focused on knowledge through discrimination between purusa and prakrti, while Bhagavadg?t? focused on the path of Karma, Jn?na, Bhakti and Raja yoga. -

rice leaf-medi- ated method. RNAi-based silencing of peroxiredoxin, cathepsin B, and cytochrome P450 resulted in significant down regulation of the NS3 gene of RSV, achieving a transcriptional reduction greater than 73.6% at a concentration of 100 ng/μl and, possibly compromising viral replication. L. striatellus genes might play crucial roles in the transmission of RSV; transcriptional silencing of these genes could suppress viral replication in L. striatellus. These results suggest effective... -

The increasing variation in climatic conditions under climate change directly influences plant-microbe interactions. To account for as many variables as possible that may play critical roles in such interactions, the use of an integrated modeling approach is necessary. Here, we report for the first time a local impact assessment and adaptation study of future epidemics of kiwifruit bacterial blossom blight (KBB) in Jeonnam province, Korea, using an integrated modeling approach. This study... -

diversity. The oak tree site contained 44 oak trees; 31 had canker disease symptoms while 13 were disease-free. A total of 370 individual arthropods were detected at the site during the survey period. The arthropods belonged to 25 species, 17 families, and seven orders. Interestingly, the cankered trees had significantly higher biodiversity and richness compared with the canker-free trees. This study clearly demonstrated that arthropod diversity was supported by the oak tree canker disease. -
