The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of reading aloud on the language
comprehension -listening and reading- with elementary school students (3rd graders). For this
purpose, subjects were chosen ; 2 classes of 3rd grade in S elementary school, Dobong-gu in
Seoul. Pre and post test was developed to evaluate the ability of the language comprehension
based on the 3rd grade Korean curriculum. The experimental group studied for 8 weeks 16
periods by using Reading Aloud, the comparative group studied by using silent reading.
As a results, these results pointed out that reading aloud help elementary school students
(especially, 3rd graders) to improve their listening and reading comprehension. This means that
Reading Aloud can be a good method for teaching the students that has poor in perceiving
letters, as well as attaining comprehension (p < .001). In listening comprehension, the
achievement of the experimental group shows significant difference from the comparative
group.
In conclusion, this study suggested that necessary to provide many literary works and to
support and develop lots of reading aloud methods for enhancing comprehensibility.
